Hello to you all!
Well, last Friday was a lot of fun! We had quite a turn-out for Adolph’s, Shelley’s and Carl’s birthday celebration – including friends and family from out of town! Tara Warpup made a beautiful – and absolutely delicious – cake for the occasion. (By the way, she makes some amazing cakes if you ever need one – ask Phil to show you pictures from Adolph’s party on Saturday or Eric Roddy’s acceptance to medical school celebration – wow!) Thanks to Rabbi Nancy for a beautiful service too!
Our next birthday celebration will be for Erwin Coleman – his 97th! The plan is to have a combination birthday/book signing event but we do not yet have a firm date. His (updated) book should be available soon so stay tuned for more details!
2017 Handy Fest
Rabbi Nancy and her husband, Scott Whitehead, have agreed to perform at this year’s Handy Fest again so we (the Temple) will be hosting that event in July. This year’s festival will run from July 21 through July 30. We have not yet determined which Saturday we will select so note them both down for now…I’ll let you know as soon as I do! If you haven’t ever attended, come join us this year – it’s always a lot of fun and a crowd favorite!
The Help Center
As most of you are aware, each year the food we donate during the High Holidays goes to the Help Center in Florence. They are always extremely grateful for those donations and I recently received a note thanking us, again, for our continued support. In the note they also mentioned that they are in need of volunteers so I wanted to pass that along to all of you as I know several people have mentioned that they would like to find ways to get more involved in the community – particularly in a cause that “speaks” to them. So, if this one speaks to you – please go down and talk with them about volunteering. The Help Center is located at 621 South Court Street (on the corner of Court Street and Veterans Drive).
Service Cancellations
It appears that the vast majority of our members will not be able to attend services on Friday, May 5 so, given this situation, we have decided to cancel services that night. There has also been some discussion around cancelling the services for May 26 (Memorial Day weekend) but, for now, we are still planning to hold a service for those who will be in town and would like to attend. Ken Wolf has graciously agreed to lead that service.
The schedule for our upcoming services through the end of June, is as follows:
- April 28 – Rabbi Nancy
- May 5 – Services Cancelled
- May 12 – Robert Adler
- May 19 – Rabbi Nancy
- May 26 – Ken Wolf
- June 2 – Rabbi Nancy
- June 9 – Ken Wolf
- June 16 – TBD
- June 23 – Rabbi Nancy
- June 30 – Buddy Bernstein
As always, congregants and members of the Shoals community, at large, are invited to attend the weekly Torah Study session which is held each Saturday morning at 9:30, at the Temple.
Reminder items:
- Soup Kitchen – Saturday, May 19 – please bring dessert items to the Temple no later than 9:30am that Saturday.
- Small Jewish Community Survey from the University of Virginia – please complete by Monday, May 22. Use the link: http://www.smalljewishcommunities.org/ and the unique community ID of THEAL03 to complete it.
If you are aware of something in the community that you would like me to draw some attention to in my message, please let me know! And, as always, if you have any announcements you would like for me to share with our membership, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
I hope you all have a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing you this Friday night!
Shalom!
Traci Welch
