Hello all!
This Thursday is Lag BaOmer and, according to Wikipedia, “all restrictions of mourning are lifted on this 33rd day of the Omer. As a result, weddings, parties, listening to music, and haircuts are commonly scheduled to coincide with this day.” It’s hard to believe it’s been that long since we celebrated Passover with our wonderful community Seder!
My primary message this week is to remind you that we will NOT have services this Friday, May 27, due to the Memorial Day weekend but Torah Study WILL be held on Saturday, May 28. If you are aware of anyone that comes to services regularly but who may not be reading my messages (tell me it isn’t so!), please be sure and remind them of Friday’s schedule change! We will resume our regular schedule next week, June 3.
Rabbi Nancy has set her schedule through the end of August and, while these dates have been added to the calendar on our Website, I am also including them here for your reference:
- June 10 and 17
- July 8 and 22
- August 12 and 26
Everyone is also invited to attend the weekly Torah Study group that meets each Saturday morning at 9:30, at the Temple.
If you haven’t had a chance to read the great article in last week’s Florence Times-Daily about Jean Ellen Schulman, who had a tent at the 30th Annual Arts Alive Festival this past weekend, click on the following link and read it now. What an amazing story! Jean Ellen, we’re looking forward to that book! http://www.timesdaily.com/life/arts_theater/schulman-a-staple-at-arts-alive/article_2f4e80b1-ea54-5081-bfab-d763a761f5a8.html
As I mentioned last week, you should have also received a communication from Howard Zeff regarding the details for the evening of Friday, June 10 when we will be celebrating Erwin Coleman’s 96th birthday. Just in case, here is the communication he shared:
Wow! Erwin Coleman is celebrating his 96th birthday on May 30. At Temple B’nai Israel, we want to share in this milestone occasion with Erwin and his family. Mark the date June 10, 2016. This is a Friday night and here are the plans. We will begin the evening with a Shabbat service starting at 6:30pm led by Rabbi Nancy Tunick. Immediately following the service, at 7:00pm, we will have a birthday celebration for Erwin by having a wine/cheese/food party. This will last as long as you would like to stay and fellowship with Erwin, his family and each other. As a matter of fact, we will have the opportunity to toast Erwin and make comments or tell stories about Erwin Coleman, our honoree. We will also have a birthday cake.
This is how we are asking each of you to assist: Please bring a bottle of wine to share with one another. Please bring a small finger food dish to share. The Coleman family will be providing the fine cheeses. This will be a lot of fun, and what better reason could we have to celebrate? Here is the recap…
