It’s hard to believe the High Holidays – and other related holidays – are over. There was so much going on in October it just seems to have rushed by!  I hope everyone found the various celebrations fulfilling, inspirational and fun!  Thanks to all that contributed in one way or the other!  A special thanks goes out to Ken and Shelley Wolf this week for taking down the Sukkah, you both give so generously of your time and talents!

And now we move further into the fall (really?) and on to November and a couple of important secular holidays…Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, of course…

Veterans Day Celebration

On Friday night, November 11, we will be celebrating our veterans.  While Rabbi Nancy will not be leading our service that evening, Buddy Bernstein and his daughter, Claire Coleman, are planning a wonderful service to honor those who have served our country so unselfishly.  The evening promises to be lovely and there might even be a surprise here and there – join us to find out what that could be!  We owe so much to our veterans so please join us as we thank them for their service!  And please don’t forget to bring a dessert item to share during the oneg!

Thanksgiving

I just want to be sure everyone is aware that we will NOT have services the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 25.  I have noted it in the weekly service listing, below, as well as on the Website calendar but I would hate for someone to miss that message and show up to an empty Temple.  Our hope is that everyone will find their own special way to celebrate the Sabbath with family and friends!

Officer Nominations

We are rapidly approaching that time when our nominating committee will be reaching out to ask for your nominations for Temple Officers and Board members. Please start considering now if you would like to serve on the Board or if you would like to ask the committee to nominate anyone in particular for a specific role. Dick Peshkin has already agreed to serve as the Chair for this critical committee and I appreciate his willingness to do so again this year!

 Services and Torah Study:

Our service schedule through December is as follows:

  • November 4 – Rabbi Nancy
  • November 11 – Buddy Berstein and Claire Bernstein Coleman (Special Veterans recognition!)
  • November 18 – Rabbi Nancy (Include the Unveiling Service for Alan Mammen)
  • November 25 – No Services
  • December 2 – Rabbi Nancy
  • December 9 – Rabbi Nancy
  • December 16 – Ritual Committee
  • December 23 – No Services
  • December 30 – Shabbat and Chanukah Party – Rabbi Nancy

As always, congregants and members of the Shoals community, at large, are invited to attend the weekly Torah Study session which is held each Saturday morning at 9:30, at the Temple.

 Reminder items:

  • Services on Friday, November 11 will include special recognition of our Veterans. Please plan to join us for this service as well as the oneg following services! Everyone is asked to bring a dessert item to share during the oneg.
  • We will be responsible for the desserts for the Soup Kitchen on Saturday, November 19, so please plan to provide items for this worthy cause. Homemade items are especially appreciated!
  • If you have not already completed and turned in your Membership renewal and pledge forms to Marty Abroms, please do so as soon as possible. Our Finance Committee needs to begin looking at the budget for 2017 and each pledge is critical so we can determine the appropriate expenditures for the coming year.
  • We have Temple Cards that can be mailed out on your behalf. Contact Barbara Sherr for more details. Check the Temple Directory for her contact information.

If you are aware of something in the community that you would like me to draw some attention to in my message, please let me know! And, as always, if you have any announcements you would like for me to share with our membership, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Hope to see you all this Friday!

Shalom!

Traci Welch
